Why is osteoporosis linked to the treatment of menopause? Osteoporosis is a disease where calcium is being lost from the bones faster than it is being added, regardless of how much calcium a woman consumes. Osteoporosis begins anywhere from 5 to 20 years prior to menopause, when estrogen levels are still high.
